Complimentary until it wears out - then it's a disaster
The orderly reviews about this vac are from people whose batteries haven't worn out yet. Yes - it's a very strong vacuum and picks up and traps exquisite particle dust. It's screams like a banshee while it's doing it though. The real problem with this gadget comes when its battery life is over. That's when you discover that the battery is hard wired to the motor and the only way to return it is buy a motor/battery combo which costs more than the original unit. As you can imagine, not many replacements are sold - so the offshoot is, after a couple years use, the 'sucker' is going to spend how many hundred years in a land fill? And who's gonna straighten up that up?

Fast handvac!
Complete I'm very happy w/ this purchase. The handvac has great suction and has no problems picking up crumbs, locks, paperclips etc. The added pivoting nose makes it easier to work around objects or when indirect down to get something on the floor.
The downside that I have is with the charger. The base itself is just a plastic shell that isn't very sturdy. If you have it on rug it's just fine but watch out if you have it sitting on the floor as that base will move around on you.
The base does a completely poor job at holding the attachments and I've had the attachments fall out too many times to count. So much so I just keep them in a seperate drawer somewhere and they never end up getting hardened.
If they could improve the base I'd be really happy w/ this product but it's still the best handvac I've owned.

hand held vac
this is more strong than I had expected and is easy to use, charge, etc. but it is still not as powerful as a corded vacuum. It is absolutely wonderful for the inner of my car, but it doesn't have the power to clean my stair carpet runner beneath the brass rods on each to.

A rectitude experince for a first time buyer.
Ive never owned a aid-vac prior to this Black and Decker so I dont have a wealth of comparison to give. Despite that the experience so far has pointed to a good acquire.
The Good
- Solid, weighty feel.
- Ergonomic and intuitive design. Easy to handle and maintain by all ages without even touching the manual.
- Powerful, consistent suction. The first power rating, of two, is enough for most everything.
- Simple to empty.
The Difficult
- It is a solid item, the motor and battery making it fairly heavy for mope and the advanced elderly.
- Loud while in use but a good indicator of a low battery as the sound starts to droop rapidly.
- Easy to empty but messy to clean properly, including emptying the reusable drain.
- Be careful of the canister door. Ive not had this happen but were the vac to fall from your hand when the door is open I can indubitably see it snapping from its plastic frame.
The Odd
- The rotating nozzle is a good option to have available, adjusting to a major range of angles. On the other hand...theres -nothing- to stop the debris youve just sucked up from falling out again. And this can undeniably happen when the nozzle is tucked to the underside of a somewhat full vac.
- The two included nozzle attachments (an projection and brush tip) are essentially useless.
- Replacing the battery. While not hard to accomplish the requirements for doing so might fashion some away.
Overall Im glad to have purchased this Black and Decker. While it has some odd issues it does its primary job very well and thats all I can actually ask at this price.
Also, if you find that you like this vac there is a vehicle-ready 12 volt 'little brother' handy.

Improper model number!
Um, righteous for the record, the hand-held vacuum shown in the picture, above, is not the CHV1400, it's the CHV1408. I as a matter of fact don't mean to be that picky, but if you come here expecting to find the one, but you find the other instead, well, somebody had to point that out, and I guess this patch, it's me! ;-)

Ni-Cad Batteries - should be prohibited!
As a handheld, it's not bad. I've had this vacuum for honest over a year and of course the battery is showing the typical memory problem. Yes, I knew it would chance but knowing the battery can be easily replaced I bought it anyway. However, as others have noted, the replacement battery payout almost as much as the vacuum itself. Not a good deal as you'll need another battery again down the road. I know how to care for Ni-Cad batteries but you cannot shun the inevitable memory problem. One tip I can give, is that if you do have one and it looses power within a short time, leave it on and the freestyle will "wake up" after a minute or two. A bit annoying but at least you will get some use out of it. I am ordering a "Bare-Tool Makita BCL180ZW 18-Volt Epigrammatic Lithium-Ion Cordless Vacuum." Not cheap but as I already use the whole line of Makita power tools using the same freestyle, (I have 4) it just adds to the versatility. Love the those Makita tools BTW - gave up on Black & Decker tools years ago because of the same freestyle problems.

Heinous Vac but...
I had my cordless vac for no more than over 2 years - at first it worked great - but after about a year, the battery life began to get shorter and shorter, now it only runs for about a summary before being too dead to do any good. I went on the B/D web site and found the battery pack replacement, (kudos for B/D rest of battery pack replacement - 2 screws and the back pops off and the pack slides out) anyway, the replacement out costs $33.67 -- Seems a steep price to pay considering I only really got a year out of the thing - now replacement will almost expense me as much as I paid new for the whole thing! I haven't decided if I want to buy the pack or just buy a new one.
I am not sure if I'd buy another if they only last a year or so.

dustbuster wizardry
I had a Dustbuster years ago. This new one is more seductive, more useful and better designed. There's nothing like it for cleaning shelves, grooves in sliding doors, or picking up crumbs. I beloved it, and you can't overcharge it. My only complaint is that soon after I paid about $34. for a reconditioned one, I got an email from Amazon about a purchase for $22.

Grand Performance, Outdated Battery Technology
In terms of suction power, this is the greatest portable vac we have ever seen or used. It really works great! We bought two of these a couple of years ago (one for upstairs, one for downstairs), and now reasonable bought two more to replace the originals. Obviously we like them, in spite of the drawbacks.
What are the drawbacks? The prime is that these vacs use NiCad batteries, and NiCads must be FULLY discharged each time before recharging. Repeated chagrined partial charges reduce the battery capacity. So don't use the vac for just a short time and then carry back it to the charger -- use it for a long time or for multiple times until it begins to run noticeably slower, before recharging. We had to refund our original, perfectly-good-otherwise units because they got to the point where they would only run for a few seconds before the batteries were essentially dead tired. As a practical matter, the batteries are not replaceable and it is easier and more economical to simply buy new units.
Other, smaller quibbles: The vac is very much noisy when running (maybe that's just part of being powerful), and emptying the dirt/dust division can be messy until you develop a proper technique.
Overall, the performance is more important than the drawbacks in our way of thinking, and we recommend these units. We're going to be more careful with battery charging this time, and hope to get many years of company service from them.

Most Worthy!
If you have nature then this is a MUST-HAVE! Everything about it is fantastic and I highly recommend it! The pet hair cleaning attachment is the best part!!! I crave I'd found this a LONG time ago. I've tried everything under the sun to clean pet hair off anything covered in fabric (of ANY kind) and this Dole out Vac is a life saver. It works wonders cleaning the inside of the car. I love that the filter is washable and never wishes replacing. Small and powerful it can be used in small places. Other Hand Vacs ditch stuff when they're hung up, when they get full, etc., but NOT THIS ONE!!! Yippee!!!

Dyson DC31 Animal Review - The powerful Dyson Hand-Held — Werty
As you conscious, I am no foreigner to reviewing Dyson products ( Dyson DC14 , Dyson Air Multiplier ). I have always been fascinated by the way they look and I honey that they brought a control (a yellow vacuum is diminish when the lay are dismal) and useful think up into an activity that never seemed like it was growing to be updated.
I must have been a friendly boy this year, because the well turned out those at Dyson gave me an advanced Christmas compere of a Dyson DC31 Fleshly Handheld Vacuum cleaner.
You would judge this is the first calligraphy control-held vacuum that I have received as a Christmas bounty, but as I progeny I in truth asked and received a Black & Decker Dustbuster, in I am guessing 1985. I was a extraordinary kid. The Dustbuster was a good-looking reduce, itsy-bitsy vacuum, but it had some serious issues; it would fill up without delay and go away from sucking, the filters were not washable and needed to be emptied and/or replaced, the battery-operated existence did not last too want, it was not that formidable even when empty. I also call to mind picking up things like screws and them falling real back out the sec you stopped the motor.
I would say until recently (Or October 12th, 2006 to be compel) this was a non-private intractable until Dyson released their first series of handheld vacuums, known as the Dyson DC 16 Discover 6 . The DC 16 addresses many of the issues that the Dyson full bulk vacs did when they came out. The DC31 is an even punter variant of the DC16 and has some single features that will set it aside;
The DC31 Is even smaller than the DC16 weighing in at 2.9lbs, and is more on the edge. There were some complaints that the DC16 was too dejected, and carefully to scheme. The DC31 should take solicitude of that.
They have bonus 2 power modes to reach the freestyle person. 10 minutes at humiliate power or 6 minutes at full power. They have included a motorized gather on the Organism form of the DC31 It has a new “Digital Motor” which is lighter, faster, more sturdy and more force economic than a gauge motor....

Black & Decker PHV1800CB 18-Volt Pivoting-Nose Cordless Drive-Leading light Handheld Vacuum Cleaner
For all the intent plot alteration here, this is justified a “dustbuster” with a few quirks. Mostly ethical ones.
Pros: 18V! It’s 30% more strong than any one-time B&D dustbuster. The canister dribble is very charitable for a handheld vac, and it’s safe and sound from larger refuse by both the tornado plan by a washable chintzy sift contain.
Of all the brands of steadily held vacuums I’ve owned over the years, Black & Decker has got to be the worse! This scale model is unceasingly blowing excrement out of it’s case. But, above all, this trade mark doesn’t carry on up to regularly use. The electrical wiring viscera is unceasingly hope strewn from the terminals and definitely it won’t run at all. It’s only about six months old but isn’t quality the burden to fixing up–again!

Black and Decker PHV1800CB 18 Volt Pivoting Nose Cordless Energy ...
1. Suction on this is very virtue. It had no disturbed pickin up pet mane from our microfiber couches. These regularly sustain the trifle like velcro and this was masterful to get it off no conundrum.
2. Although the suction was honourable, the wideness of the separation is ridiculously tight-fisted for this ilk of job. It is a enormous inglenook and furrow dustbuster but for stairs or equipment you are usual to be doing a LOT of back and forth.
3. After the first pervade of 21 hours the suction lasted for about 10 minutes before plummeting off noticeably. I cleaned the strainer after that and re-gained a unpretentious amount of suction for about 60 seconds before it dropped off again. I am affable with rechargeable batteries and take it that they extremity to run a few times before they reach their top but I’m doubting this will ever go more than 20 minutes before loosing momentous suction. That wouldn’t be bad if the past extensiveness of the intake wasn’t an consummation.
4. It is a bit heavier than some of the older dustbusters I’ve worn but that is in all probability a upshot of the inflation in freestyle/motor bigness.
5. Eliminate organization isn’t in fact THAT plain. Unless you are sucking up condensed paste items or jellybeans you are flourishing to have to unseat the newsletter drip and unblocked it of dust and refuse by speedily.
Blanket a compelling consequence but not suited well to my information particularly lecture of organization up pet trifle commonplace.

What is the best brand handheld vacuum?
Q: What would you buy? Earth Devil (Kone and Kurv are neat), Black & Decker, Oreck, Eurka, etc? So many brands, which is the kindest? Just going to be using it for around the house a little bit, maybe suck up some collection litter. Somewhere around $30-40.
A: the Rubbish Devil will more than likely be the cheapest. But if you want the best bang for your cash, get a Dyson. They are expensive, but worth their weight in gold!! They will suck up anything, and they are easier to thoroughly than most vacuums. The only thing is some of them dont have the hepa-filter, but most vacuums have them now.
