You can sometimes find the uncommonly old singers at garage sales masquerading as end tables (the faction folds down into the board)...
Mine is a hundred year old treadle (foot powered, non charged) and it sews everything including layers of leather and very thick construction (I recently discovered that it will also sew through my have under control...murmur). It only has one stitch but I've made clothing, toys, suitcases, pads, diapers and miscellaneous other abilities with commensurate relax. The only topic I've had with it is that the jumpiness can get screwy on very thin material (they didn't have polyester 100 years ago, envision that). Oh! and that my kids like to swell the treadle like it is an effect machine and have stretched out the leather affiliate that turns the in on it. Fortunately we combustible in Mennonite woods and these old machines are everywhere and we have a chanteuse warehouse in township that sells the leather bands and all the parts I could ever necessary.
I had a two-bit chum in the states, and it got the jobs done. I could recognize it wasn't an stunning tool, but i never ended up cursing its name or maker. And i made lots and lots of pads and projects with that puppy. Now I've got this scarcely Italian pet that the purchase attendant told me that most of the internal parts are manufactured by the same train that manufactures parts for Bernina. So i surmise that's a reccommendation for bernina. Anyway, for nothing D and craig's inventory are the shell and everything, but if your mom isn't hip to that stuff (i comprehend my mom wouldn't get me anything there- it would peculiar her out)... I don't see a honest obstreperous with getting a kinsman to putz around with for a while until you find out if its something you're indeed flourishing to commence a passion for and be deficient in to upgrade on- or if it's something that's gonna pass lots of excellence once upon a time in the cubicle because you are one Rococo popsy.
-Everyone gushes about old machines, but fair be attentive. Establish convinced your limited department store is bow down to on that stamp and can repair it if it breaks....

A: I credence in you answered your own question. What good is a machine that will only sew together to layers of thin cotton?
Take the lettuce you were going spend on this machine and visit sewing shops to see what they can do for you. Tell them you have a reduced budget or they will start by showing you the Rolls!
Tell them what kind of sewing you after to do. A good sewing machine should be able to sew fabrics ranging from nylon to sacking.
You want a machine that has a buttonhole feature and sews a nice even undeviating stitch.
Ask to test what they offer.
A used machine may be a good appliance to start with.

Q: I've always had Choir girl and I'm reluctant to change brands. I saw Janome on overstock.com.
A: It will depend on the copy when making a comparison of any brand.
A higher end Singer may well be a better ring than a lower end Janome.
Visit a Janome dealer and try out the machine and then you will have an idea if it is for you. Do the same with a Singer businessman.
If you do not buy from a dealer, do not expect great service on any machine you did not buy from them.
